Workshop Syllabus

Workshop: Cake Decorating

Length of workshop: 1 day

Overview: Learn creative and cool cake-decorating techniques.

Do you lose track of time watching cake decorating videos? Take YOUR creativity to the kitchen! During this workshop full of fun activities you’ll learn how to make a range of fabulous cake toppers for any occasion… and, most importantly, they’re delicious too!

Participants will:

  • Learn simple piping techniques
  • Experiment with colour 
  • Develop fine motor skills 

WARNING: This workshop utilises several food items check for allergies!
IMPORTANT NOTE: This workshop is resource heavy, be sure to organise resources prior to each activity. For example have icing already divided into bowls, have materials already laid out on a table etc. nnSession 1

Biscuit design (15min)

WHAT: Students will design 6 biscuits

HOW:

  • Students are given the biscuit template. Using textas and pencils students create their own icing design.

Marble Biscuit Design (15min-20min)

WHAT: Marble icing design. 

DEMONSTRATION

  • Demonstrate How to mix icing
  • Demonstrate the marble design technique 

HOW

1) Mix icing // Add icing sugar to a bowl and then add tiny amounts of water using a spoon until you have reached the desired consistency. (Note for the marble design, the icing needs to be somewhat runny, refer to the how to video. 

2) add 1-3 drops of food colouring until you’ve reached the desired colour.

3) Students need two different coloured icing

4) Cut the corner off a plastic zip lock bag to create a piping bag. (only snip the tiny corner off, you don’t want to create a big hole)

5) Cover the biscuit using one colour

6) using the second icing colour pipe striped across the biscuit

7) Finally, use a toothpick to create the marble effect refer to the how to video.

Prior to the Workshop 

  • Set up bowls with icing sugar already distributed and cups with 1cm of water (lots of water is not necessary)

Biscuit Decorating (25min-30min)

What: 

Students decorate their remaining 5 biscuits

How: 

Students utilise piping bags, knives, spoons, tooth pics and their original design drawing to decorate their biscuits.

Same as activity 2.

Head Coach:

  • To demo activity
  • continue the decoration of your biscuits for students to view for ideas.
  • Walk around and assist students in decorating

Coach:

  • Walk around and assist students with decorating
  • Keep an eye out for any spills that may need cleaning up

Technique challenge – Students apply a ring of thicker icing (use the premade icing) around the outside of the biscuit to stop the runny icing from running off the biscuit. See first step how to.Session 2

WHAT : Both Stations should be set up and run at the same time. Divide students into two groups and have each group work at one Station group. Once students have finished at their first station, they can move to the other station. At Station 1, students decorate their marshmallows, and at station 2, students decorate their Pop Sticks. Once both are complete, students push their marshmallows ontop of their Pop sticks.

Marshmellow Decorating (25min-30min)

WHAT: Students design their marshmallows using fondant, icing and sprinkles.

DEMONSTRATION

1. Coaches give a quick demonstration to spark students’ creativity and show students the materials available to them.

  1. Students roll fondant and cut a rectangle out.
  2. Wrap Marshmellow with fondant sticking the fondant onto the Marshmellow using the premade icing.
  3. Students add additional features to their marshmallow to create a character or fun design.

    • Kids create a functional cake topper and get rewarded for using patience to acquire a tasty treat
    • Engaging kids in feedback using the poll

    DESIGN IDEAS

    Marshmellow Pops Design (25min-30min)

    WHAT: Students decorate 6 pop sticks. 

    DEMONSTRATION

    1. Coaches give a quick demonstration to spark students’ creativity and show students the materials available to them.

    HOW

    1. Students decorate straws using ribbon, colourful contact, stickers and textas
    2. Marshmellow has placed ontop of straws once students have worked at both stations.

    WHAT’S HAPPENING

    • Kids build confidence in their craft skills
    • Kids make their own creative choices
    • Kids create a functional cake topper and get rewarded for using patience to acquire a tasty treat
    • Engaging kids in feedback using the poll

    Session 3

    Cupcake Decorating (20min)

    WHAT:

    Show kids how to apply what they’ve just learnt to a cupcake.

    HOW
    1. Get them to decorate their cupcakes in a style of their choosing

    Cake Shop Design (15min)

    WHAT: Students can imagine and create their own innovative bakery business 

    HOW

    • Using the Cake Shop Template students fill in the beginning design elements.
    • Student-led activity, students can cut out and stick their logo on top of their take-home container.
