Photography: Composition 1

An interactive workshop from the comfort of your own home!

Overview:

There are opportunities for photos all around us but how do we figure out what to take a photograph of and how to make that photograph beautiful and interesting to look at? Photography Composition Rules help photographers decide what to take photos of and how those photos are going to look.

The goal of the workshop is to introduce students to fourteen different photography composition rules and how to use them to create fun, interesting, and creative photographs. The workshop will help students to see that there are opportunities for photos everywhere! The rules of photography are introduced using entertaining and creative photos: the goal is to inspire students to always be on the lookout for photos in their home and neighbourhood.

Students will learn to understand and use the following photography rules:

  • Session 1: golden triangle, golden spiral, rule of thirds, leading lines, negative space, implied motion, and fill the frame
  • Session 2: KISS, rule of odds, point of view, patterns, texture, symmetry, and natural framing
  • Session 3: Review photo rules, learn to provide constructive feedback on photos, creative ideas for using rules of composition
